Immunity Smoothie

Can you believe it's almost December? I surely cant, this year is just flying by. We're in the midst of fall in California with winter on the way, which means it's officially flu season. I've been doing everything I can to avoide getting sick because no one has time to get sick with the holidays coming so soon. But, besides all my effort to "not touch my face", "wash my hands", and "drink lots of water",  I recently caught a cold.

I wanted to prevent my cold from turning into a full on flu because, after all, I have better things to do than lie in bed. So, I started thinking about all the best foods to boost my immunity. I came up with a few ingredients and turned it into a smoothie! I made this smoothie while I was sick and drank it every day.  Luckily, I felt better within a couple days. I'm not sure if it was just the smoothie and I'm not saying it's a miracle cure all, but it helped me! It's packed with flu busting ingredients that might help you too!

So what's in it? well, it's just 5 ingredients plus ice and water. There's orange, turmeric, ginger, honey and cayenne! The cayenne is optional but I like a little spice and it helps clear your sinuses! Here's the details on all the ingredients.

The orange is high in vitamin C which boosts the immune system and maintains healthy bones and tissues. In fact, vitamin c has been shown to be the ultimate pindicator of health with studies showing it's effective in protecting from cardiovasular disease, cancer, stroke and eye health.

The turmeric is high in curcumin which is a strong antioxidant. It is also anti-inflammatory and everyone can benefit from reducing inflammation in the body. Curcumin has been proven to "turn off the signals" betweel your body's cells that cause inflammation. This is so beneficial when you're sick so that your body can repair itself without being inflammed.

Ginger is also super high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti fungal. Studies on ginger have also shown that it reduces the risk of colorectal cancer and reduces muscle pain which can help when you're sick.

The honey is a natural throat soother and is full of antioxidants as well. Raw honey is the best choice. Using honey that is harvested locally to where you live is also beneficial because it can help with allergies that you have to your local plants and pollen.

The cayenne is optional but it helped clear out my sinuses which helped me breath a lot better. The pepper is high in Vitamin A and boosts your metabolism. It's also great for increasing circulation and helping to get bacteria moving out of the body!

Here's how to make it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 inch piece of fresh turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 pinch cayenne

Method

  • peel the orange
  • peel the turmeric and ginger with a potato peeler
  • add all the ingredients to a blender
  • add ice and 4-6 oz of water
  • blend on high speed until smooth

Drink this spicy, citrusy smoothie and boost your immunity!

Wishing you health and wellness,

Kristina
