5 Clean Beauty Products I Can’t Live Without

SWEAT sweat.com

You may have heard that anything we put on our skin makes its way into our bloodstream in less than 26 seconds.

Well, I never paid attention to that shocking fact until I experienced sudden and drastic allergic reactions to various skin care products. One morning, I woke up with tiny red bumps all over my face because the line of Korean luxury products I was using had caused irritation, itching and reddening of my skin. Another morning, I woke up to discover that the new luxury eye cream I had purchased from Sephora made me look like I had been punched in both eyes. Not only did my under eye areas remain extremely itchy and sensitive after I completely washed the eye cream off, the area swelled and appeared bruised looking for 2 full days after.

It was this awful experience that made me rethink the products I put on my skin. I started researching non-toxic beauty brands, educating myself about harmful ingredients I should avoid and learning about clean products that are safe for my skin.

Through a lot of trial and error, I finally found products that are both gentle on my sensitive skin and effective. Here are the 5 products I currently swear by:

1. Farmacy's Green Clean Makeup Remover ($34)

What I love: Green Clean looks like pastel mint sorbet, smells like lime and feels silky soft. All I need is a little spatula worth of cleansing balm to completely remove my makeup. I use this every single night and my skin always feels fresh and clean afterwards. The balm is gentle on my skin and doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy or "tight" like some other makeup removers do.

No nasties: Farmacy's beauty products are made from naturally-derived ingredients in upstate New York and are free of parabens, formaldehyde and artificial coloring. Green Clean has sunflower oil and ginger root oil which gently cleanses and nourishes your skin. The Moringa tree extract purifies your skin, leaving it refreshed and devoid of dirt and the papaya extract acts as a natural exfoliator to help renew the appearance of your skin.

2. One Love Organic's Easy Does It Foaming Cleanser ($29)

What I love: I always double cleanse to make sure that my skin is left with no trace of dirt. I use my LUNA 2 Cleansing Brush to lather the Easy Does It cleanser all over my face. Again, my skin never feels dry after cleansing and is always softer and smoother.

No nasties: One Love Organics' products don't have GMO, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicon, PEG, synthetic perfumes and dyes. This cleanser features unique ingredients like Chilean soap bark extract which results in a foamy lather that doesn't irritate or dry your skin. The honeysuckle extract reduces skin inflammation and itching, making this cleanser perfect for mature, acne-prone, sensitive, normal, combination, dry and/or oily skin.

3. Herbivore's Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Mist/Toner ($32)

What I love: This Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist is created with a coconut water base that is infused with youth-boosting hibiscus flower petals and moisture-enhancing rose to tone, hydrate, and soften all skin types. I use it as a toner after double cleansing and it reduces any redness I might have (my redness usually shows up near my nose). I sometimes use this as a makeup setting spray or as a facial mist throughout the day or when I'm traveling. I also love how light and refreshing it smells.

No nasties: All of Herbivore's products are created with ingredients that are plant-based, organic and food-grade. This facial mist is made without parabens, sulfates and phthalates. It's created with pure plant actives and no fillers. It's also vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, and formulated without gluten and silicone.

4. Josie Maran's Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 ($32)

What I love: When I first tested the Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 in-store, I was worried about the moisturizer leaving my skin looking oily in the New York humidity because it appeared thicker than most moisturizers. Much to my delight, this Allure beauty winner is actually light and incredibly hydrating because of the argan oil. The moisturizer glides on my skin smoothly and absorbs pretty fast. It doesn't make my skin look white like some sunscreens do. And although there is a slight fragrance, it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin.

No nasties: This all natural sunscreen is chemical-free and devoid of parabens, sulfates and phthalates. It has green tea and an innovative SunBoost ATB™, which is a unique blend of antioxidants, skin-soothers, and hydrators that work in tandem with natural sunscreens to boost sun protection while conditioning and nourishing the skin.

5. Skin Owl's Mangosteen Beauty Drops PM Face Oil ($85)

What I love: The smell! I grew up eating mangosteens and love the tropical fruit for both its sweet taste and amazing smell. It takes a while for the oil to fully absorb but I have noticed a visible difference since using this (I'm on my third bottle). My complexion has been consistently brighter and smoother, and I am no longer plagued with the oil bumps that used to live on my cheeks. I definitely won't be giving this up despite it's expensive price tag. A little goes a long way!

No nasties: This natural product only has 2 high-quality ingredients: raw, organic, cold-pressed African baobab oil and pure mangosteen oil. Mangosteen's natural antibacterial properties and antimicrobial compounds visibly correct skin blemishes. Combined with baobab oil, this oil acts as a high level anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory moisturizer.

More than a year after my incident with the bruised-looking eye bags, my skin remains clear, smooth and radiant. Even if you haven't experienced drastic allergic reactions to your products, it's never too late to start thinking about the ingredients you're putting on your face. Our skin is the largest organ and absorbs 60-70% of whatever we put on it. Those ingredients end up in your bloodstream so you want to make sure you're using non-toxic and non-harmful products.
