'Nana Ice Cream And All Its Perks
It's summer time, which means the heat is getting stronger each day and so is my appetite for all things cold and creamy.
When I first started on my fitness journey, it was summer time too and in my desire to give it my all I made a conscious effort to eat clean as much as possible. That meant swapping some of my favorite foods with more healthy options.
One thing I was missing the most probably was ice cream, so when I figured there is actually a healthy version of this that you can make at home, no one was happier than me! Because there is no summer without ice cream, right? Or there is, but it’s a very sad one haha.
So how to make your own healthy version of your favorite summer treat or in other words what exactly is nana ice cream?
It's basically a cold dessert very ice cream like.
The name nice cream, 'nana cream or any other derivative comes from the fact that is made with frozen bananas blended up into soft serve. This version of ice cream is suitable for everyone who is suffering from lactose intolerance as it is non dairy (the "milk" used is nut milk) and also gluten free and vegan. The base is frozen bananas and from there you can take it wherever your imagination goes.
Variations are endless – if you want fruity flavors add additional frozen or fresh fruit (for example, if you want strawberry nice cream you add to the mix frozen or fresh strawberries, if you want cherry, add cherries! etc), if you want chocolate flavor add raw cocoa, for vanilla flavor add vanilla extract. You can play with adding nuts, nut butters, frozen, fresh or dried fruits, honey and maple syrup for extra sweetness, cinnamon, mint, etc. - you get the gist.
'Nana ice cream is a healthy treat, it takes really little time to make and you probably have all the ingredients already in your kitchen. The best part is that you will never again have to throw away ripe bananas, so it is a win win!
Are you sold yet?
My summer favorite is definitely chocolate nice cream. I love the blend of cocoa and bananas, you can barely taste bananas in it and the taste is really like chocolate.
Preparation time: 5 min
• 1 frozen banana – it is a must that bananas are frozen. If you do not have frozen bananas, peel some and put them in the freezer for 20 min to 2 hours.
• ¼ cup nut milk (almond milk, coconut milk), rice or oat milk
• 1 table spoon cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon cocoa nibs
• vanilla extract optional
- Add bananas and raw cocoa to the blender and blend until smooth, approximately 3-5 minutes.
- Scrape down the sides if needed.
- When done, add cocoa nibs or choco chips for the extra chocolate feel. Mix together, scoop into a bowl and enjoy immediately before it melts.
- That’s it!

If you love more firmer ice cream and can resist the temptation to eat the nana cream straight away, add 1 tbsp of vodka to the blend (this is purely to make it easier to scoop after freezing), place the 'nana cream into an air tight freeze safe container and put it back to fridge for at least an hour.
I hope you give it a try and enjoy this little treat as much as I do!
