5 Ways To Make Your Next Taco Night The HEALTHIEST One Yet!

LET'S TALK TACOS.

Taco night is a staple thing over here on the west coast in CALI but I have a feeling that everyone has some kind of special place in their heart for a good ol' fashioned taco night, right?!

BUT, here's the thing that can happen with taco night. It can get REAL unhealthy, REAL quick.

Between the tortilla chips covered in grease, the burritos that end up being the size of your forearm and the mounds of cheese...it's not always the best option.

I honestly can't live without tacos or a burrito bowl so I NEEDED to find a way to make it healthy. And not just kind of healthy but EXTRA healthy.

I found a way to make it just that plus I have a few secrets that will let you enjoy your taco tuesday WITHOUT getting bloated!

WHO'S EXCITED?

Okay - let's get into it.

#1. LACTOSE FREE SOUR CREAM

Okay so, what?! I didn't even know that this existed until like 2 weeks ago and I am SO happy that I found it. I found it at my local grocery store so it wasn't like any kind of exclusive health store but I will still leave you the link of the brand I like below so that you can see if it is available near you!

If not then I would just ask your local store if they carry something similar!

Here's why I love it:

Lactose is a naturally occuring sugar in milk. A LOT of people are LACTOSE-INTOLERANT which means that they have trouble breaking down this natural sugar which makes them experience gas, nausea, dirrhea, and serious abdominal cramping.

SO, this lactose free sour cream makes it possible for people that are lactose intolerant to ENJOY SOUR CREAM AGAIN! Which is like, a staple ingredient to a taco or a burrito bowl if you ask me...

#2. NO TORTILLA, LETTUCE WRAPPED OR A WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT TORTILLA.

If we're looking at calories, a normal 6-inch flour tortilla is packing 150 calories while a whole wheat tortilla is only holding onto 53 calories OR you can do NO torilla or do a lettuce wrap and save yourself an extra 50-100 calories. (If we're comparing it to a small taco...don't even get me started on the amount of calories in a tortilla that's fit for a burrito..)

#3: ALMOND MILK CHEESE

Again - NO LACTOSE here. Almond milk cheese is becoming more and more popular and I'm seriously in love with it. It also has WAY less fat and cholesterol than animal cheese which is ideal considering diets high in fat and HIGH in cholesterol raise our chances for heart disease.

I personally like to buy a shredded mozerella "style" almond cheese and it literally tastes and melts the same way mozerella does.

#4: VEGGIE TACOS > MEAT TACOS

Vegetables carry less EVERYTHING except NUTRITIONAL VALUE when it comes comparing them to meat. So simply by making this swap you'll get more vitamins and minerals with less calories, fat and cholesterol PLUS your digestive system will thank you!

Veggies are MUCH easier to break down compared to meat which means less bloating, indigestion and constipation.

#5: ALWAYS ADD AVOCADO

Not just because avocados totally make just about anything but because what's the one thing that avocados SERIOUSLY have a lot of?

HEALTHY FATS, right?

And you know what's AMAZING about healthy fats?

When consumed with other foods that might digest quickly, they help to slooowwww everything down and let you digest a little bit slower.

Why is this good?

Because when we digest things too quickly, our blood sugar spikes which gives us a quick little burst of energy and then makes us REALLY sleepy. It also usually causes us to store things as fat rather than burning them as fuel.
