Winter Wellness Tips

The middle of winter is a time when it can be easy to forget about our bodies and the vital role they play in our lives. Somewhere in the chilly mix of it all, we can find ourselves reverting to unhealthy habits, not realizing the enormous potential this season has for rejuvenation and healing.

Today I'm sharing with you a thing or two about keeping your body and mind aligned all year round that have proven to help me survive Winter. Take me up on one of these gentle nudges below, and just maybe you’ll find a bit more radiance amongst the frostiness!

Drink Golden Milk
Golden milk is one of the most satisfying things I have been drinking lately. It is so soothing to sip on in bed after a day of hustle and bustle. Its main ingredient is turmeric.

Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory that exhibits over 150 potentially therapeutic activities, including antimicrobial activity as well as boosts for the immune system. My favorite Golden Milk recipe is this one from Joanne Gerrard Young, a Master Raw Food Chef and the brains behind The Healing Cuisine. Make it today; you won’t regret it!

Get Creative With Your Crockpot
My crockpot gets an intense workout week after week during the winter; I'm sure you can relate! I tend to crave, like a lot of people, more hearty, warm foods when the temperatures drop. But try to stick to ingredients that are seasonal to keep meals nutrient-dense and full of flavor. Some staples in my recipes this winter have been green beans, sweet potatoes, leeks, cabbage, citrus, pomegranates and brussels sprouts to name a few. I've got plenty of delicious crock pot recipes on my blog if you need some inspiration!

Eat Local When Eating Out
I know we all love to eat out every once in a while. It is a great way to spend precious time with friends and enjoy some relaxation away from the kitchen. When I am dining out, I stick to places that pride themselves in their ingredients being locally grown, fresh and organic.

Make Time for Yourself
If you sign up ahead of time for fitness classes at the beginning of the week, you’ll be more committed to attending. And even still, give yourself time to decompress and relax, whether it’s a night at home watching Netflix, laughing with your friends, or being around family. If you indulge, get back on track with a juice-jumpstart or some healthy veggies to remind your body that healthy eating is the norm. Winter may feel long, but the effects of living well will last you a lifetime!

Check Your Body Temp
It's important to stay in touch with your body temperature. Sometimes our body gives us hunger signs when really we are just too cold! Studies show that we do tend to gain a few pounds in winter since food, of course, can give us a very comforting feeling. So just do a body check. And when in doubt, warm up to some raw chocolate, tea or a cup of bone broth by a fire.

Somewhere in the chilly mix of it all we can find ourselves reverting to unhealthy habits, not realizing the great potential this season has for rejuvenation and healing.
