How To Bounce Back From A Binge
Whether it be a vacation, long weekend, long work days or the holidays — we've all experienced a time in our lives when we've gone a little overboard with unhealthy eating. The truth is, it's completely normal for a ‘cheat meal’ to turn into a ‘cheat day’ and for a ‘cheat day’ to turn into ‘five cheat days,’ so don't be too hard on yourself if this sounds like something that has happened to you.
For me, it's usually traveling that throws me out of whack, so on the plane ride home, I always take some time to write in my phone what I specifically need to do to get back on track. Below, I'm sharing six of my top tips that always help me hop back on the bandwagon!
1. Start Your Day With Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is traditionally used to remedy digestive distress, support liver detoxification, normalize digestive juices, and reduce intestinal bloating. Mix 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar with twelve ounces (350mL) of warm water, and drink in the morning on an empty stomach. Feel free to add a little honey or maple syrup to help enhance the flavor.
2. Drink Plenty of Water!
One of the first things I do after overindulging is drink a LOT of water. The Mayo Clinic recommends an average 2.2 liters of water per day. A great way to make sure you're staying hydrated is to invest in a 1-liter reusable water bottle so that you can easily refill throughout the day. For extra antioxidants, try adding some freshly sliced lemon!
3. Eat Your Veggies!
Eat well-balanced meals including loads of veggies, some lean protein, and healthy fats to help ease your digestion back to normal. After over-indulging all weekend, your body will want to continue to eat as much as you had been eating, so be sure to choose fiber-rich snacks to keep you satisfied (ie. broccoli, oatmeal, chia seeds, black beans).
4. Get Your Sweat On
While you may not be feeling totally up to a full workout, try doing something short and effective, like walking or jogging to get your body moving again. Even if it's only a 20-minute workout, getting your blood pumping again will help you sweat out toxins and give you a much-needed boost of energy after a weekend of carb--loading.
5. Don't Skimp On Sleep
Getting a good night's sleep is often overlooked when it comes to health and wellness but it is SO important! Instead of winding down with a scroll through social media, opt for treating your body to a full 7-8 hours of sleep, turning your phone to ‘do not disturb’ so your mind can rest without interruption.
6. Get Sweaty In The Sauna
If you're feeling too unwell to exercise the sauna will be your new best friend. Sweat is your body’s natural way to detoxify and while there are countless ways to work up a sweat (like hot yoga), after a night of over-eating or over-drinking, you might only be up for a sauna session and that’s okay! It is super relaxing and a wet sauna can be fantastic for your skin (BONUS)!
Like I said, we've all had our cheat days, weeks, months. Don't stress out and dwell on how off-track you are, simply take some time to plan how you're going to get back into your routine!
