How the BBG Community Changed My Life
In honour of International Women’s Day, I wanted to share my BBG story and reflect on how this amazing community has truly changed my life for the better.
I remember June 2014 like it was yesterday. I was in a place where I felt completely lost, emotionally and physically. I never exercised, I struggled with emotional eating and I had no idea where to begin. I was scrolling through Instagram one day and I saw one of my college friends using BBG, also known as “Bikini Body Guide,” by Kayla Itsines. I had never heard of BBG or Kayla, but I was definitely intrigued by her style of exercise – 7 minute circuits, mostly body weight exercises that could be done anywhere. Immediately, I knew this would be the perfect style of training to get me started, but what I didn’t know was how greatly this program would impact every aspect of my life.
Kayla and the BBG Community have completely revolutionised the way people use and support one another via social media. After a few short weeks of doing the program, I decided to create my own fitness Instagram to hold myself accountable. Every single day I felt inspired and motivated to keep up with my workouts, because I knew I was doing them with millions of women all over the world! It was (and still is) such a cool feeling! I love having a safe place online where I can share my struggles, ask questions, and look to other women for daily inspiration.
For the first time in my life, I was able to actually stick to a workout plan. Thanks to the endless support of the BBG community, I found myself on Week 24 of the Bikini Body Guide. While I had found such amazing success from utilising my fitness Instagram, I had yet to go to a BBG Meet Up. In case you didn’t already know, the BBG Community hosts meet ups in popular cities world wide once a month. At each meet up, the respective hosts lead a BBG style workout inspired by the BBG program! It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded women within the community and make new friends while getting healthy.
That being said, while I adored the online community, I was scared to go to a meet up. I have struggled with social anxiety for my entire life and the thought of going to one of the meet ups alone absolutely terrified me. Each month would go by and I would plan to go to the meet up, but bail at the last minute because I let my anxiety get the best of me. In March 2016, I finally worked up enough courage to attend a New York City meet up. While I panicked the night before because I didn’t know anyone that was going, from the moment I arrived, I was absolutely blown away. Everyone was so kind, helpful and welcoming, I had no idea what I was so nervous about! It was definitely difficult for me internally to feel so vulnerable, but the more I went to the meet ups, the more amazing women I met and the easier it started to become for me to attend events alone. This attitude started to trickle into my everyday life outside of BBG. I no longer needed the comfort of a friend in order to plan events or attend them. I simply went because I wanted to. It’s such a liberating feeling! It’s been 2 years since my first meet up and this is something that I continue to apply to my life today. I no longer feel held back by social anxiety and I have learned the importance of putting yourself out there.
Over the past four years, the BBG community has done so much more than simply help me get fit. It has has taught me how to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. It has given me confidence in my beautiful and ever changing body. It has helped me overcome my social anxiety and most importantly, it has given me real life friendships with incredible women all over the world.
I want to give a special thanks to Kayla and Tobi who have created something so special. I don’t know of any other community that celebrates women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels – there is truly a place for everyone within this community and I am so grateful to be a part of it.
Happy International Women’s Day to all of you beautiful ladies! Let’s continue to support and love one another every single day. Let's connect! Follow me on Instagram: @erikacweiss or leave me a comment below telling me why you love the BBG community!
