Hair Care and the Gym
Hair Care and the Gym
Hair and gym; two things that don’t do well together. If you’re like me and sweat like a pig, you have contemplated whether you should wash your hair even though it’s going to get sweaty in a couple of hours. PLUS, the more you wash your hair the greasier it’s going to be.THE STRUGGLE IS REAL. It’s particularly bad if you have dyed your hair as much as I have, washing it is a hassle (oils, hair treatments, purple shampoo, and the list goes on)! Quick showers just aren’t an option for me. So how do I manage and what should you do with your hair after a workout?
If you don’t sweat a lot washing it isn’t the best solution. Try washing it every other day. If it’s too sweaty or greasy try styling a certain way like a bun or braid - you won’t be able to tell that your hair isn’t squeaky clean. Washing your hair everyday can weaken and shorten the lifespan of your hair so try to refrain from drying out your hair by excessive washing. If you sweat a lot and your hair is completely wet (ME), try blow drying first to see how it looks. If not, skip shampoo and just add conditioner to your ends.
Do NOT add dry shampoo to wet hair or it’s going to look like cake. Wait until it dries first or blow dry your hair and then add dry shampoo. You can also add dry shampoo before your workout to prepare your strands to absorb the sweat during the workout.
OILS are key
Honestly, I don’t go to the gym to look good, I go to workout and I don’t really care what I look like. I’ll never understand girls who actually take the time to do their makeup for the gym. If I did that I would end up with my face all streaked due to sweat dripping down my face. It’s also not good for your skin to exercise with makeup on.
This brings me to the topic of hair oil. Every time I plan to wash my hair, I put oil on it the night before (even a full 24 hours before). I usually vary between coconut oil, macadamia nut oil, and moroccan oil but most often use coconut oil. Why? Because it nourishes your hair, reduces frizz, and deep conditions by penetrating the hair more deeper and faster than other conditioners. It also detangles your hair, promotes hair growth, and protects hair from sun damage. I usually put a few drops on my hair after I shower. It helps with the frizziness and it leaves my hair softer. It’s literally a miracle oil. So massage the oil into your hair and go to the gym rocking that greasiness.
Instead of shampooing your hair you can also use a hair treatment, leave it in for around 20 minutes and wash it off. This will keep your hair moisturised and soft.
Managing a fitness lifestyle and keeping yourself glamorous can be hard, but there’s always a way! Try my tips instead of washing your hair everyday and hopefully you too will notice healthier more luscious locks.
