Female Founder Series: Yourlixir
Yourlixir

When co-founders Desiree and Antonella incorporated superfoods like maca and spirulina into their diets, they noticed dramatic differences in the way they looked and felt; they had more energy, they were more productive, their hair, skin and nails were stronger. Amazed by the transformative power of food, they decided to launch Yourlixir to help others improve their health and overall wellbeing.

We spoke with the founders to find out what Yourlixir means, where they source their premium ingredients from and how we can easily add these superfoods into our everyday lives.

Hi Desiree and Antonella! How did you two meet?

We met freshman year of high school in Boca Raton, Florida. After we graduated, despite living on opposite coasts, we often found ourselves meeting up in other corners of the world, eager to explore, eat good food and of course, expend a little adrenaline here and there.

What inspired you both to create Yourlixir?

We both come from families that have a more holistic approach to food, medicine and wellbeing. Over the past ten years, we’ve each struggled with health issues and healthy food choices while traveling frequently. The “ah-ha” moment came while brainstorming over sushi; we realized that we could help others who dealt with similar health concerns by creating an easy, on-the-go method to incorporating superfoods into your daily life, no matter where you are or where you go!

Why did you pick these five superfoods: maca, matcha, spirulina, activated charcoal and turmeric?

We chose these five because we personally use them and because combined, they serve up a multitude of benefits that range from natural energy boosters to detoxing, hormone balancing, powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and a laundry list of other amazing health perks. The one thing they have in common though, is that no matter which one you take, you’re going to be healthier and feel great!

Where do you source these ingredients from?

Our superfoods come from all around the world, primarily from where each originated to ensure the highest quality and flavor. For example, our maca comes from the high Andean Mountains of Peru where this root has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine. Our ceremonial grade matcha is sourced straight from Japan, the home of this ancient vibrant green health elixir.

What does “Yourlixir” mean?

Yourlixir is a way of living the best version of you - mind, body and soul. By definition, the word “elixir” is a magical or medicinal potion that can prolong life. Whether you believe in magic or not, once you’ve felt the effects that these superfoods have, it’s kind of hard not to. Health stems from the inside out, so we are firm believers that when you give your body the right tools to succeed, everything else naturally falls into place. Each of us may require something a little different than the next person so it’s up to you to find the elixirs that suit YOUR lifestyle.

What impact do you hope to have on your customers?

With Yourlixir, we’ve experienced changes in our own lives that were transformative and improved the quality of so many aspects within it - health, happiness, mental wellbeing, relationships and even business, so we aspire to help others achieve their best self, too. We also hope to inspire the younger generation to look at health in a more approachable way so that it becomes a part of the cultural norm that carries on to future generations to come. The healthier we are as a community, the happier we are.

Have you noticed changes in your health since incorporating superfoods into your diet?

Antonella: If I was blind, deaf, and mute, I’d still say yes to this question. The amount of positive changes I’ve noticed are endless but I’ll mention my favorites. My energy levels have increased drastically from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed. I feel energized, alert, and focused. Not sluggish, tired, or fatigued. When I was in University I remember I was ALWAYS tired, no matter how much I slept.

After I was diagnosed with “adrenal fatigue”, I found that adding magnesium and (especially) spirulina into my diet was one of the single most important things I did. Long story short, when I stay on my superfood routine, my immunity is up, my hair, skin, and nails are strong and growing, my activity levels during my workouts are high, and my productivity at work is peaking because of being focused, calm, and concentrated. I feel completely comfortable and confident in my body and mind, and can utilize it to the best of its ability!

Desiree: There’s not too much more I can add to what Antonella said because all those things ring so true. I originally started on maca powder as a way to balance my hormones and help combat skin issues. When that worked better than all of the other prescriptions, remedies and odd and ends things I had tried, AND actually made me feel healthier, I knew I was onto something. That superfood eventually led to all the other ones that I happily fill my pantry with now.

What suggestions do you have for those who are intimidated by superfoods like activated charcoal?

We understand that superfoods can be intimidating at first! Do a little googling before hand to see if you’re taking any medications that they may interfere with. Activated charcoal is so powerful that if taken in close proximity to your vitamins and minerals, it may detox them as well! That’s the only real worry about it. The real benefits of superfoods are so worth biting the bullet and giving them a try. We encourage everyone to add them to your diet slowly, so you can see and feel the benefits yourself!

Any easy recipes we can try?

Here's a go-to recipe that we use for our weekly detox:

Mix them all together, pour over ice and sip away.

This detox lemonade is great for resetting your system after a cheat day, ridding toxins in your system after running around the city, and especially great for helping kick that hangover. We have a ton more recipes available via our Pinterest & blog!

What advice would you give your younger selves?

When it comes to taking care of your health, it’s never too early to start, BUT it’s also never too late!

Quick Fire Questions:

Desiree:

What’s your fav Yourlixir product?

The golden milk (turmeric) latte! I love the warm, rich blend of coconut milk, Yourlixir turmeric, fresh grated ginger, cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper (for better nutrient absorption) with a generous swig of maple syrup.

Go-to workout:

Kickboxing. I really enjoy the fast paced, high intensity workouts that leave you sweaty and sore.

One person (dead or alive) you’d like to have dinner with:

There is such a powerful movement taking place right now amongst badass women from all different walks of life that have stepped out and are creating a new space, not just for women, but human rights, equality and awareness that I admire so much.

It would be hard to name just one, so I may cheat a little bit and say that I’d love to have a ladies brunch with Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Jessica Alba, The Riot Girls: Carmen Perez, Bob Bland, Tamika D. Mallory, and Linda Sarsour, and of course, Chelsea Handler (because she has no filter when asking tough or uncomfortable questions and can somehow make you laugh all the while).

Antonella:

What’s your fav Yourlixir product and how do you eat it?

The Matcha/Maca combo! I blend a delicious Matcha latte with coconut milk, coconut oil, tocos, cinnamon, and our Peruvian Maca, which is a whole other amazing product on it’s own.

Go-to way to destress:

A 20-minute mediation in the morning, which grounds me and sets me up for my “list”.

Favorite vacay spot:

Ubud, Bali. The energy and uniqueness of it is really magical. It exudes a calm, loving, and healthy aura. I find the people very loving and helpful, and mainly, their focus on health and a healthy lifestyle is my favorite part. It’s very simple to practice self-love, heal yourself, and take a break from life’s craziness. Plus, it’s breathtakingly beautiful.

One person (dead or alive) you’d like to have dinner with:

One person(s) who I’m quite fascinated with is Jon (& Missy) Butcher of Lifebook. The way they’ve “created” their lives, the way they live it, the way they raise their children, and the way they prioritize their relationship is incredibly inspirational to me.

Another person would be Dr. Wayne Dyer. He’s the only person whom I can revert back to and listen to multiple times (via podcast or video) and learn something new from. His life lessons are so powerful, and he is such a strong, beautiful and positive force. It’s nice to know there was a person out there that was/is able to spread so much love & kindness, especially after coming from such a hard place. It’s enlightening.
