Faking It For The Fit Girl - Your Guide To The Best Faux Tans

The best tan is a fake tan. And the perfect fake tan should leave people questioning where you've been on holidays lately. It provides the ultimate pick me up - it also has the added benefit of enhancing all that hard work you've been doing in the gym. A fake tan has the ability to make you look more hydrated and also gives the illusion of white teeth - double win!

For your tan to go on evenly, you need an even base. The best and easiest way to achieve this is to jump in the shower and use a coffee body scrub, focusing on those areas which can get particularly dry including knees, elbows and wrists. The benefit of using a coffee scrub is that it also stimulates blood circulation plumping the skin and creating a smooth, moisturised base.

Avoid any tell tale signs you haven't been holidaying in Positano by moisturising those key areas that tan can latch to before you start tanning - knees, elbows, ankles, wrists and hairlines, the tell-tale spots for fake tan. My go to scrub is FRANK BODY SCRUB which apart from scrubbing away any dead skin and prepping the skin, will also moisturise.

Now is where the fun begins, I prefer to use a mousse tan as well as a mit as I find it gives the most natural tan and also I can see where I have applied the tan and avoid any mishaps. There are a variety of different products on the market all with different colour bases which will determine which is the most perfect for you

- Violet based are best suited to medium - dark skin types
- Caramel-based tanning products are classic and suited to most skin tones from light to dark.
- Green-based tanning products are fantastic for all skin types. Green is “pink-correcting” as these colours are opposite on the colour wheel, so it makes it an ideal colour base for those with fair skin.

I personally go for a green base, Bondi Sands is universally flattering and one of the best selling tanning solutions on the market. Their newest Ultra Dark is a great option as you only need one layer and it is dark enough that you can see where you have (and maybe haven't) applied the tan. They also have a range of products so you can maintain your tan once it is on. And the best tanning mit - Jennifer Hawkins JBronze mit is hands down (excuse the pun) the best!

Tanning 101 - you're going to want to start with your legs. This is critical because if you leave your legs til last, you risk ruining your stomach tan or transferring some of the product onto your thigh and its just easiest to start with your legs - got it? Start with pumping a bit of product onto the mit and applying in circular motions. Go over every part of your body to make sure all of the product is rubbed in and also to make sure you've covered every availavble space.

Once you've tanned, even if you had a mit on, wash and scrub your hands. There is nothing worse than a perfect tan but grubby looking hands. If you feel like you want to take your tan onto the hands. after washing use the excess left on your mit to buff over gently the top of your hand or put a little gradual tanning moisturiser and rub into the back of the hands.

Throw on some comfy clothes (preferably dark) and climb into bed. If you want to make sure your sheets stay a crisp white, you may want to climb into a tanzee, think of it like a sleeping bag inside your bed. Tans are best left overnight to fully develop.

Once you've had plenty of beauty sleep, its time to hop in the shower. Tans have a bronzer layer that will wash off the next day revealing an even perfect tan if you have followed all of these steps.

Now that you are a bronzed goddess, go snap a new profile picture or show off your newly discovered guns at the gym.
