Empowered Women Empower Women: 5 Ways to Support Female-Driven Initiatives this International Women's Day
Empowered Women Empower Women: 5 Ways to Support Female-Driven Initiatives this International Women

I was at the club on Friday night dancing with some friends, when at some point someone asked us "how do you ladies know each other?" "Oh, we work out together".

I am so grateful for all of the wonderful women in my life and in this world at large. I have an amazing group of friends that 'I work out with' but also have other amazing female energy in my life: strong women I know from various jobs, college, women in my family, and even women on the Internet. These women all inspire me daily and as I come into my womanhood I am finding it more important to not only celebrate women but support women. Here are some of my favorite ways to support and empower the other women—both in my direct community and at large.

Shop Women Founded Companies
Let your money do the talking and make a conscious effort to shop at businesses founded by women. Having visible female leaders can be empowering to other women looking to own their own businesses and can inspire young girls to one day be their own boss. If we're able to support these companies, they'll only become more successful. In 2017, female founded companies only received 2% of venture capital funding. While it may take a lot to shift this narrative, shopping with our dollar is the first step. Some of my favorite brands to shop and companies to support are Outdoor Voices, Classpass, Glossier, Moon Juice, and Beyond Yoga.

Donate to Organizations that Benefit Women
While we're talking about speaking with your dollar, there is no better time than now to support local, national, or global causes that aim to make the world a better place for women. Find an organization that works with what YOU are passionate about, whether it's women's health, inspiring young girls to be involved in fitness, or working to get more women into computer technology.

Volunteer your Time to Charities that Work with Women
If you are unable to donate your money, you can still donate your time to charities who work with, and benefit women. A local shelter could be a great place to start, or you could check in with your favorite faith-based organization, afterschool program, or food pantry. What better way to empower and support women than by working directly with them?

Plan a Date with Your Favorite Ladies
Go out to coffee, dinner, or enjoy a day at the park with some friends. Go shopping, volunteer together (extra points if it's an organization that works with women), have a movie night and watch a female-directed film, or cook together. Head to the gym, a spin class (SoulCycle is female founded!), a yoga class, or even host a group BBG night. Whatever you do, make sure to spend some time with the women that inspire you.

Tell Another Woman Why They Inspire You
Call your mother, reconnect with your best friend from college, find that girl in your office who always speaks up in meetings that you admire, text your friend's cousin who you bonded with once about your love of Rupi Kaur, or DM that girl on Instagram you've been following for a year but haven't spoken much to. Tell these women why they inspire you, and how they've impacted your life. All too often we aren't recognized for the things that make us great. Start the cycle by reaching out to someone - you may inspire them to share the love.

Happy International Women's Day! It's so important for us to stay passionate about supporting each other. I'd love to hear how you're celebrating, who you're supporting, and who inspires you.
