Six Life Lessons My Mum Has Taught Me.

Spending Mother’s Day away from your mum is hard, especially when you’re on the other side of the world. I love living in London, but with my entire family back home in Australia it can be difficult at times. I'm lucky that as a travel blogger, I get to explore the world and share it through my blog, Live with Elle, with my family.

To celebrate UK Mother’s Day, I took some time to reflect on six life lessons my incredible mum has taught me. She’s the most passionate, accomplished and resilient woman you’ll ever meet, and we can all learn a lesson (or six) from my mum, Jacqueline Parker.

Enjoy every bite.
Whether you’re tucking into a gigantic birthday doughnut or a dream brunch (hiiiii avocado, poached eggs and haloumi!), take the time to savour your meal. Chew slowly, and really relish every bite. This is the key to being mindful about what you eat;slow down and pay attention to what you are eating. It’s not about dieting (ew!), it’s about having a healthy relationship with the food you eat.

Forgiveness is key.
Don’t hold grudges; just don’t do it. There are few things that mum says not to do, but one of them is to not hold grudges. Simply forgive, forget and move on. Life is too short to remain angry at someone, or exert energy on someone that doesn’t deserve a second thought. Use that energy and power to motivate yourself, or others around you, not to make the same mistakes and to do good.

Just keep moving.
Every day, remember how lucky you are to be able to breathe, walk, run, skip, jump and hop. Be grateful for your health every day, and just keep moving. Whether that means taking your dog for a walk every day or hitting up the SWEAT app (even when you don’t feel like it), just do it! You’ve only got one body, and you need to show it the love it deserves.

Be kind to everybody, not matter what.
You never, ever know what someone is going through, and a little kindness can go a long way. Show compassion, be empathetic and always listen to people. My mum has time for everyone and she’s the most selfless person I know. Because of these beautiful traits, she spreads happiness wherever she goes. Positivity spreads like wildfire, in the same way that laughter is infectious and quickly spreads between friends.

Believe in yourself and you can do anything.
I’ve watched my mum’s career absolutely skyrocket over the last 15 years, and that’s because she’s a damn hard worker. She’s taught me to set goals, reach for the stars and to aim high. You might not always reach the stars, but you’ll get to the moon and that means you’re halfway there already. My mum has her own kickass business, and has now won the prestigious REINSW Award For Excellence as a Buyers Agent THREE times! I’m so incredibly proud of her.
